L1ResPrune: General Pruning for Explicit Scene Representation Primitives

Abstract

In this paper, we present L1 Loss Residual Selective Pruning, termed L1ResPrune, a general pruning method for explicit scene representation primitives. L1ResPrune is applicable to both static and dynamic scenes and is compatible with representations based on Gaussians as well as other types of primitives. Building upon the standard alpha-blending formulation, we derive an importance score for each primitive based on the change in the L1 loss induced by its removal. This formulation provides a theoretically grounded criterion for pruning and does not rely on the specific characteristics of any particular representation primitive. Extensive experiments demonstrate that, compared with existing 3D Gaussian Splatting based pruning methods, L1ResPrune consistently preserves higher rendering quality while achieving superior SSIM and LPIPS performance.

Then back it, or bet against it.
